I think John’s guitar just became out of tune from using the whammy earlier in the song and that’s why the solo sounds off. Eddie probably had a different setup for it to stay in tune

Listening to blues guy play hard rock is always entertaining AF. Mayer is one of those musicians who could fall down a flight of stairs with a set of pots and pans strapped to his ass and still make better music than 99% of those out there.
